Neil Schofield-Hughes was born in 1961 in London. After reading Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Christ Church, Oxford, he spent most of his working life in the Civil Service, working in both Whitehall and Brussels. After taking early retirement he moved to Cardiff in 2015.
After leaving the Civil Service, he stood as a Labour Party local government candidate but resigned over Brexit and joined the Welsh Liberal Democrats just before the 2019 General Election. He worked in the Senedd as a policy adviser to Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds MS in 2022-3.
He campaigned actively against Brexit and was Chair of Cardiff for Europe, a Director of Wales for Europe and is a former European Movement National Council member.
He has written commentary pieces on politics, economics, Brexit, constitutional issues and cultural politics for Bylines Cymru, Nation Cymru and the Western Mail. He is a committed supporter of Welsh independence.
Away from politics his passion is classical music, and he sings in the BBC National Chorus of Wales.
